Barnes, London

A duck pond with a very expensive moat·Greater London·London

Barnes is the village London forgot to finish swallowing, and the people who live there pay handsomely to keep it that way. It has a duck pond, a green, a church the Archbishop of Canterbury stopped to dedicate on his way back from Magna Carta, and a bend of the Thames so tight the Boat Race has to row round it. The rules of modern football were written in a house here, and Barnes has been politely pretending to prefer rowing ever since. Residents talk about it like a Cotswold village, and twice a day the tide comes in to remind them it is a flood plain with a London postcode.
