Erith

A riverside resort the bulldozers cancelled·Greater London·London

Erith has been on the verge of regeneration for so long that the regeneration now has period features of its own. Henry VIII fitted out his flagship here, the Victorians had a go at turning it into a riverside resort with a pier and an arboretum, and then the 1960s flattened the old town for concrete that was supposed to be the future. The White Hart and St John's Church made it through the clearance. The Thames is still the best-looking thing in town, and nobody from the last sixty years of planning gets to take credit for it.
