Whitchurch, Hampshire

A rotten borough that went disappointingly respectable·Hampshire·South East England

Whitchurch made the paper the Bank of England printed its money on for generations, then let the business drift up the road to Overton, which is the most Hampshire way imaginable to mislay a fortune. What stayed behind is a silk mill still weaving on the River Test, a river so protected the trout have firmer planning rights than the residents, and a conservation area that treats a new window frame as a constitutional question. The last time anyone properly kicked off here, the Salvation Army packed the Town Square in 1889 and won the right to protest in the High Court. The town has politely declined to use it ever since.
