Basingstoke
Basingstoke is the biggest place in Hampshire never to be made a city, and it wears that the way a tall middle child wears being forgotten at Christmas. London sent its overspill here in the 1960s, put a ring road round the middle and left visitors to find the way out, which several are still attempting. Thomas Burberry opened his first shop on the high street and then, like plenty of ambitions raised here, took the train to London. What's left is a town that gets on with it and has stopped waiting for anyone to be impressed.
