Old Basing
Old Basing is the part of Basingstoke that insists it isn't Basingstoke, and it has the thatch and the Tudor brick to win the argument. Cromwell eventually got into Basing House and burned it down, and the village has treated every planning application since as another attempt. What's left is bungalows, hedges and a very watchful conservation area, a short drive from the roundabouts it would prefer you didn't mention.
