Overton, Hampshire
Overton was granted a royal market in 1218 and has spent every century since politely declining to turn into a town. The River Test rises a mile up the road, so the village gets a chalk stream fly fishermen cross continents for, at the stage where it is mostly a rumour. There is a station on the main line, and most of the village treats it like the good china. The postal address says Basingstoke, which residents write on envelopes and never once say out loud.
