South Wonston

South Wonston is the Hampshire village for people who wanted a Hampshire village and then saw the heating bills on the thatched ones. It sits up on the downs next to an army base, ringed by places so listed and conservation-protected you need permission to breathe on a doorknob. South Wonston skipped all that. No cathedral, no coach tours, no four-hundred-year-old damp, and nobody drives out to photograph it, which turns out to be less an insult than a feature.
