Winchester
Winchester was the capital of England once, and has spent the thousand years since quietly reminding you of it. The star attraction is a Round Table that is neither Arthur's nor especially old, a medieval fake repainted for Henry VIII, which tells you most of what you need to know about how the city sells itself. It is where people move when they want the world to know they have arrived, close enough to London to matter and far enough to feel above it. Jane Austen is buried in the cathedral, and even she only came here to die.
