Is Whitchurch, Hampshire a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Whitchurch, Hampshire.

Yes. Whitchurch is one of the quieter corners of Basingstoke and Deane, and the crime figures back that up. Crime runs at about half the borough's rate. Hardly anyone is out of work. Almost nobody lives in an overcrowded home. The borough's crime has to happen somewhere, and mostly it isn't here.

Police recorded 213 crimes in the Whitchurch area in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 36 per 1,000 residents. That's roughly 50% below the average for Basingstoke and Deane over the same period. For a town with a main road, pubs and a busy square, that's a low figure.

Put the two numbers side by side and the gap is plain: about 36 crimes per 1,000 people in Whitchurch against about 72 across the borough as a whole. The borough average includes Basingstoke itself, and the comparison is with the council area Whitchurch sits in, not with anywhere in particular. It's still a gap estate agents in plenty of places would love to be able to quote.

The town's makeup fits the numbers. The average neighbourhood has about 2,760 people per square kilometre, unemployment is around 2% and overcrowding is about 2%. None of that causes low crime on its own, but it describes a settled town of people in work with room to live. Nobody has been priced into sharing a two-bed with four others and a grudge.

The breakdown needs a warning first. With around 200 crimes a year, a handful of incidents can move any category by several points, so the mix is a snapshot, not a settled feature of the town. Violence and sexual offences make up about 46% of the local total against about 35% nationally. That's a broad legal category that includes common assault with no injury, and it's the largest category almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour is about 9% here against 16% nationally, which leaves the parish newsletter short of material. Criminal damage and arson is about 8% against 7%, public order and other theft are both about 7%, level with the national shares. Burglary is the one to note: about 7% of the local total against about 4% nationally. On a small base that could be a few break-ins in a bad month, but check the locks and the insurance all the same.

What happens after a report is a separate question and a less cheerful one. Hampshire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 38th of 42 forces. That's a force-wide figure, set by decisions made across the whole county, and it says nothing about how safe Whitchurch's streets are. About 35% of the force's cases are closed with no suspect identified. Crime is rare here, but when it does happen, the odds of anyone being charged aren't high.

Safety is one of Whitchurch's real strengths: crime at about half the borough's rate, in a town with little of the pressure that usually pushes the figures up. The quiet here is real, and it shows in the figures, not just the brochure.
