West End, Hampshire

Countryside, if you squint past Southampton·Hampshire·South East England

West End is the West End the way a motorway services is a destination: same name, none of the show. It is really a comfortable green shoulder of Southampton that has spent two centuries insisting it is proper countryside, and mostly getting away with it. Its proudest historical hour was a hilltop telegraph rig built to relay messages between London and Plymouth, which is to say the village made its name by helping two more important places talk over its head.
