Wendover

A Chilterns postcard with a railway dug through it·Buckinghamshire·South East England

Wendover has been the place people pass through on their way across the Chilterns since before the Normans, and now a high-speed railway is being cut through the same gap so they can pass through faster. Robert Louis Stevenson stopped at the Red Lion for a single night and got an essay out of it, which is a better return than most weekend walkers get. The Ridgeway runs straight down the High Street, so on a Sunday the cafés fill with people in walking boots, pleased with themselves for climbing a hill the residents can see from the kitchen window.
