Schools are one of Wendover's real strengths, and families tend to get there on foot. The town has its own junior school and its own secondary. Across the county, more than four in five graded schools are rated good or better. The nearest of each is roughly a quarter of an hour's walk away. Very few parents here need to drive to the school gate.
Buckinghamshire as a whole has 94 schools and settings with a published Ofsted grade, and 80 of them are good or outstanding, about 85%. Nineteen are outstanding. Eleven require improvement and three are inadequate, which is not many for a county this size, though enough that the grade of a particular school still matters. Another 94 settings have no published grade yet. They are unrated, not poor.
The two schools that carry the town are Wendover Church of England Junior School and John Colet School, the local secondary. John Colet's playing fields are also home to Wendover Football Club, so the pitches get used on Saturday afternoons when the pupils are at home. The John Hampden School and Halton Community Combined School, which serves Halton up the hill, add primary places nearby, and Chiltern Way Academy is also on the list. Buckinghamshire Council allocates places using its published admissions rules, so a house close to John Colet's gates does not guarantee a place there, and the furthest distance offered last year is the figure to ask the council for when choosing a street. Stoke Mandeville Combined School and Weston Turville Church of England School are within reach for families who end up on the edge of town.
Getting to school is quick. The Department for Transport's modelled journey times from 2019 put the nearest primary about 16 minutes' walk away on average and the nearest secondary about 15, or 8 to 9 minutes by car. Those times come from 2019 modelling, but a walk along a medieval street plan is unlikely to have got much longer since then. The bigger risk is the school run getting stuck behind walkers coming down off Coombe Hill.
Schools are one of the strongest reasons to choose Wendover, provided the family ends up on the right side of the admissions rules.
