Is Wendover a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Wendover.

Yes. Wendover has one of the lower crime rates in Buckinghamshire. Recorded crime is well under half the county rate, and almost nobody is out of work. Overcrowded homes are rare. In a town known for hill walkers and coaching inns, crime is a small part of daily life.

Thames Valley Police recorded 361 crimes in Wendover in the year to May 2026, a published rate of about 37 for every 1,000 people. That is roughly 43% below the average for Buckinghamshire as a whole. For a town on a main road through the Chilterns, with half a dozen pubs and its own railway station, it is a low figure.

Side by side, Wendover's rate of about 37 crimes per 1,000 people compares with about 65 per 1,000 across Buckinghamshire over the same year. The county's crime happens mostly somewhere other than this gap in the hills.

Wendover is compact, with about 3,200 people per square kilometre on average across its neighbourhoods, because the town is squeezed into the gap between Coombe Hill and Wendover Woods. At the 2021 Census, unemployment was about 2% and about 2% of homes were overcrowded. That is the background against which the crime figures are recorded: a tight, mostly employed town with plenty of room in most of its houses. It describes what the town is like and does not explain the crime rate.

The mix of crime needs care, because 361 offences is a small enough total for a handful of cases to move any share by several points. Violence and sexual offences made up about 43% of Wendover's recorded crime, against about 35% nationally. That category is the largest almost everywhere and includes common assault where no one was injured. Other theft was about 14%, against 7% nationally. Anti-social behaviour was about 13% here and 16% nationally, public order 9% against 7%, and criminal damage and arson 6% against 7%. Shoplifting was about 4%, roughly half the national share of 8%, in a High Street of delis, a bookshop and two charity shops. With a total this small, next year's mix could look quite different. Anyone looking at a particular street can check the police's own street-level crime map, which shows where offences were recorded and is more useful than the town-wide shares.

Thames Valley Police charges a suspect in about 9% of cases across its whole force area, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 37th of 42 forces. It closes about 37% of cases without identifying a suspect. Those are force-wide figures for the twelve months to May 2026, and they say nothing about Wendover in particular. They describe what happens after a crime is reported, not how likely a crime is in the first place. In a town this size, the force's charging record is unlikely to touch most residents.

Wendover is a safe place to live. Across the whole year, its few hundred recorded crimes are spread around a small town with a lot of people out walking.
