Tooting

Gentrified so politely nobody noticed the bill·Greater London·London

Tooting started life as a stretch of Roman road to Chichester, which means people have spent the best part of two thousand years passing through it on the way to somewhere else. Eventually some of them got off. There is a tube station at the top of the hill and another at the bottom, and residents defend their end with the fierce loyalty of people who have never once needed the other one. Buyers who came for Clapham at a discount have noticed the discount has gone, and most of them stayed anyway, which is the nicest thing anyone can say about a place.
