Who lives in Tooting?

For anyone buying or renting in Tooting.

Most people in Tooting are graduates in their early thirties, and most of them rent. Fewer than half of households own their home. The typical resident is about 33. Six in ten have a degree. Families with children are a minority. Plenty of the people here haven't yet decided where they'll settle.

According to the 2021 census, about 45% of Tooting's households own their home, about 38% rent privately and about 16% rent social housing. With that many private tenants, a lot of local small talk is about when the tenancy ends.

The median age is 33, and about 43% of residents are aged 25 to 44, so the biggest group is in the middle of their working lives. Few people in Tooting are at the start of adult life or the end of it.

The Office for National Statistics models typical household income in Tooting at about £83,000 a year before tax, for the financial year to March 2023. That's a gross figure, and in Tooting the rent comes out of what's left.

Tooting had 70,638 residents at the 2021 census, the source for every population figure on this page. About 29% of households are one person living alone, including the 7% that are a pensioner on their own. Couples with children make up about 16% and lone parents about 10%. More Tooting kitchens cook for one than for a family of four.

About 60% of adult residents have a degree and about 11% have no qualifications. Only about 2% are full-time students. Tooting has plenty of graduates and very few people still studying, so most of those degrees were finished years ago.

About 88% of residents describe their health as good or very good. Wandsworth as a whole has a preventable death rate that's better than the England average, and its smoking rate of about 9% is similar to England's. Both are borough figures set against an England benchmark, not measures of Tooting alone.

Tooting is home to a young, educated and mostly healthy population, and most of them are still renting their way towards somewhere they'll stay.
