Wandsworth Town
Wandsworth Town used to make beer and gas by the river, and has since turned the wharves into flats whose balconies look out on the water where the coal barges once unloaded. The shopping centre dropped the name Arndale for Southside, on the reasonable theory that nobody south of the river had fond memories of an Arndale. Up by the Common, a grid of streets known locally as the Toast Rack holds some of the most expensive townhouses in London, the only toast rack in Britain anyone would remortgage for. The old Ram Brewery site still brews a little beer, the way a family keeps one horse after selling the farm.
