Stoke Poges
Stoke Poges is a wealthy Buckinghamshire village whose post town is Slough, and it has spent the better part of a century being polite about that. Thomas Gray wrote his elegy here, the one where the paths of glory lead but to the grave, in a churchyard now ringed by gravel drives suggesting the message didn't stick. The golf club got the listed gates, the lodges and a bridge by Repton. The envelopes still say Slough.
