Bourne End, Buckinghamshire

A commuter village that stopped commuting·Buckinghamshire·South East England

Bourne End is a village a railway built and Beeching half-dismantled, and it has been commuting on the bit he left behind ever since. In 1858 the vicar had to campaign to stop everyone calling it Bone End, and the place has guarded its good name with the same energy for a century and a half. When builders finally got onto Slate Meadow, the field that keeps it from merging into Wooburn, they dug up a prehistoric cow. No residents' association has ever had a better objector.
