Slough
Slough is the town England uses as a punchline, usually told by people who have only seen it from the M4. A poet once asked the bombs to come and fall on it, and the town carried on making Mars bars, filmed Thunderbirds and filled up with the head offices behind half the lanyards in the Thames Valley. Parts of it are ugly, and the trains to Paddington are fast enough that nobody has time to dwell on that. Sneering at Slough has always been cheaper than buying in Windsor.
