Chalfont St Peter

A town still insisting it's a village·Buckinghamshire·South East England

Chalfont St Peter is one of the largest villages in the country, which is a bit like being one of the tallest jockeys. In the 1960s it knocked down most of its Georgian shops and put concrete flats and offices round a car park, a decision that has aged exactly as well as everyone in the 1960s promised it would. The station it relies on belongs to Gerrards Cross, and the national statisticians filed the pair as one town some time ago. The word "village" is the last bit of the old place nobody has got round to demolishing.
