South Norwood
South Norwood's most famous detective is a dog called Pickles, who found the stolen World Cup under a bush. Arthur Conan Doyle lived here as well and still only came second. The Victorians dug a canal through the place, then tried a railway pushed along by air pressure, gave up on both and kept the pub. Grand plans have been arriving and leaving ever since, and what lasts is the pint and the fast train out.
