What are the schools like in South Norwood?

For anyone buying or renting in South Norwood.

The schools are one of the strongest reasons to live in South Norwood, and the grades behind that are Croydon's as a whole. More than eight in ten graded schools across the borough are good or outstanding. None is rated inadequate. A primary is usually a few minutes' walk from the front door. The schools are a selling point here even if the parking is not.

Ofsted has graded 56 schools across the London Borough of Croydon, and 47 of them are good or outstanding, which is about 84%. Ten are outstanding, nine require improvement and none is inadequate. Another 56 have not been graded yet, either because they are new or because they have not been inspected under the current system. These are borough-wide counts, so they include schools on the far side of Croydon that a seven-year-old in South Norwood will never attend.

Croydon Council allocates places using its published admissions rules, and the faith schools add criteria of their own, so living near a named school does not guarantee a place there. The useful check is the council's allocation record, which shows how far from the gate the last child offered a place at each school lived in recent years. That distance can change more in one year than the area does in ten. Parents who pick a house by its distance to the school gate find that the council measures the same distance more carefully than they did.

On the Department for Transport's modelled times from 2019, the nearest primary is about seven minutes' walk away on average and the nearest secondary about 13. South Norwood Primary carries the district's name, and Heavers Farm Primary School and Cypress Primary School serve the residential streets with the area's two Catholic primaries, St Chad's and St Thomas Becket, and the Church of England's St Mark's. Oasis Academy Ryelands takes children from primary age. For secondary, Harris Academy South Norwood is the school with the place's name on the gate, and Oasis Academy Arena is the other local option. Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form gives older students a route that does not mean leaving the district. Most of the year 7 decision comes down to two Harris schools and one Oasis, and families end up planning around them whether they meant to or not.

For a district that is cheap by London standards, the schools are a real strength, and they are the reason many families who come for the trains end up staying for the school run.
