Sydenham, London

Still living off a palace that burned down·Greater London·London

Sydenham spent the Victorian era as the address that came with the Crystal Palace, and has spent every year since 1936 pointing out that the glass building burned down but the postcode is still here. It also has the first canal ever abandoned by an Act of Parliament, so the place has form for grand plans that quietly stop being mentioned. Three boroughs share it, and none of them puts it on the front of the brochure. The people who wanted Dulwich and then did the sums end up on Sydenham Hill with the same old woodland on the ridge and a mortgage they can say out loud.
