Is Sydenham, London a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Sydenham, London.

Sydenham is safer than the borough around it, and by a clear margin. Its crime rate runs well under the Lewisham average. Violence makes up a smaller share of incidents than it does nationally. Nuisance and car crime make up more. Most of what goes wrong here is irritating more than frightening.

In the year from June 2025 to May 2026, police recorded 5,090 crimes in Sydenham, and the published rate works out at about 104 crimes per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 14% below the Lewisham average. The rate is calculated on a different population base from the district's own head count, so it is the published figure that matters, not a sum done at home.

Lewisham as a whole runs at about 122 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year, against Sydenham's 104. Buyers who cross the borough off a shortlist because of its overall numbers are discarding one of its calmer corners along with it.

The neighbourhood is dense and working. Sydenham averages close to 9,900 residents per square kilometre, about 5% of working-age residents were unemployed at the 2021 census and about 10% of households were overcrowded. That is ordinary inner-suburban London texture, and none of it explains the crime rate on its own.

The mix is where Sydenham differs from the national pattern. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault with no injury, make up about 29% of recorded crime here against about 35% across England and Wales. Anti-social behaviour is about 22% against 16% nationally, and vehicle crime about 11% against 5%. Other theft runs level with the national share at about 7%, shoplifting at about 6% against 8%, and criminal damage and arson at about 5% against 7%. The local over-representation is in the categories that leave a scratched door and a noisy night, and violence runs below its usual share. The police.uk crime map shows reported incidents by street, and a ten-minute look at the road you are buying on beats any district average.

What happens after a report is a force-wide question. The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 33rd of 42 forces in England and Wales over the year to May 2026. About 53% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those figures describe the Met across the whole of London and say nothing about how safe Sydenham is. A car broken into on Sydenham Road will be recorded, and the likeliest outcome is a crime reference number for the insurer.

Sydenham is one of the safer parts of Lewisham, with crime that leans towards nuisance and away from harm, and that makes it a sound choice for anyone weighing up safety in this part of south-east London.
