Dulwich
Dulwich is the corner of south London that an Elizabethan actor bought in 1605 and his charity never quite gave back, which is why parts of it still have private roads and a working tollgate on College Road. Buyers pay London prices to live under a four-hundred-year-old landlord and call it village life. The South Circular cuts straight through the middle, the one modern intrusion nobody has worked out how to charge a toll on.
