Send, Surrey

Send is named after sand, and it dug the stuff out of its own edges on and off until the 1990s, which is the most honest relationship any English village has had with its name. Ripley started out as Send's hamlet, got its own parish and ended up with the shops, so the mother village does the quiet and the daughter does the errands. Eric Clapton went to school here and Paul Weller lived on Vicarage Lane, and Send has handled both facts the way it handles most things, by not mentioning them to anyone.
