Shalford, Surrey
Shalford once ran a fair that pulled in merchants from across the country, and these days it mostly hosts the A281 on its way to somewhere else. It let its Tudor mansion go to make way for a water treatment plant and held on to the stocks and the whipping post, which is one way of deciding what counts as heritage. The mill opposite the Sea Horse survived by joining the National Trust, which is the Surrey way of saying it retired.
