Royston, Hertfordshire

Cambridge's garden shed with a royal hunting licence·Hertfordshire·East of England

Royston is where Cambridge money goes when it wants a garden and a fast train to King's Cross, and can live without anyone asking which college. A king once banned anyone from taking game within sixteen miles so he could hunt here undisturbed, and the town has been gently discouraging excitement ever since. Under the main crossroads there is a cave covered in carvings nobody has managed to explain, which makes it the only part of Royston still trying to be mysterious. William Cobbett called it a common market town with nothing of beauty about it, and the place has spent two centuries proving that was never the point.
