Letchworth

Paradise, as drawn by a planning committee·Hertfordshire·East of England

Letchworth was the first garden city, planned down to the hedgerow by reformers who were certain they knew how you ought to live, and it still carries itself like a well-behaved diagram. Those same reformers voted the pubs out of the centre, opened a pub with no beer to make up for it, and sent half a century of thirsty residents up the road to Hitchin and Baldock. The ban went decades ago, but the town centre still drinks like it's waiting to be told it's allowed. Its grandest building is a former corset factory nicknamed Castle Corset, which is about as wild as Letchworth ever got.
