Hitchin
Hitchin is a wool town that worked out it sits halfway between London and Cambridge and has been charging for the location ever since. Its river is spelt Hiz and was meant to be said Hitch, which is fair warning about taking anything round here at face value, the listings included. Girton College was founded here because Hitchin was a safe distance from Cambridge, then moved to Cambridge as soon as it felt brave enough. The morning platform still acts out a smaller version of that escape every weekday, except the commuters come home for tea.
