Is Royston, Hertfordshire a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Royston, Hertfordshire.

Royston is a safe town where crime mostly shows up as nuisance. Its crime rate is lower than the district around it. Violence and sexual offences make up about the national share of the total. Anti-social behaviour makes up a bigger one. For a buyer, the likeliest trouble is a noise complaint, and serious crime is rare.

Police recorded 1,038 crimes in Royston in the year from June 2025 to May 2026. The published rate is about 60 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 11% below the North Hertfordshire average. That count covers a full twelve months, so one bad weekend cannot move it far.

North Hertfordshire's own rate over the same year was about 67 per 1,000. Royston comes in at about 60, so it is below the district figure but close to it. The district covers Hitchin, Letchworth and Baldock as well, and none of them has a reputation to protect. Royston is simply a bit calmer than its neighbours.

The town is fairly compact, averaging about 4,500 people per square kilometre across its statistical areas. Unemployment is about 2%, and about 2% of households are overcrowded. That describes a settled, working town where few homes are short of space and few residents are out of work. None of those figures explains a crime count, but they describe the kind of place that produces one this size.

Violence and sexual offences are the biggest category, at about 36% of Royston's recorded crime against about 35% nationally, so the town is almost exactly typical. That category is a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury, which is why it tops the table nearly everywhere. The figure that stands out is anti-social behaviour, at about 23% here against about 16% nationally. Vehicle crime is about 8%, against 5% nationally. Royston sits where the A10 meets the A505, and some of the cars parked in town are clearly worth a look to the people who look. Criminal damage and arson make up about 6% here against 7% nationally, shoplifting about 6% against 8%, and other theft about 5% against 7%. Police.uk maps reported crime to the nearest street, which is a quick way to check the road a house is on, more useful than any district headline.

Hertfordshire Constabulary covers Royston. Across the whole force, a suspect is charged in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 23rd of 42 forces. In about 40% of cases nobody is identified at all. Those are force-wide outcomes, so they say nothing about Royston's own streets. They answer a different question, whether someone gets caught, and in Hertfordshire the answer is about as often as anywhere else. Charles I was marched through Royston as a prisoner of the Parliamentary army in 1647. Arrests have rarely been that high-profile since.

Royston is a safe place to live, a little calmer than the district around it, and its crime runs to noise and parked cars far more often than to anything worse.
