Northfleet

Beside the fast train, still catching the slow one·Kent·South East England

In 1830 a developer's prospectus promised Northfleet would become to Gravesend what St Leonards is to Hastings, and the town has spent the two centuries since politely ignoring the plan. Its finest hour was a Victorian pleasure garden built in a disused chalk pit, which is the most Northfleet idea imaginable: take the hole the quarrymen left behind and sell tickets to it. Ebbsfleet International is less than a mile away with no proper footpath to reach it, so the high-speed future is next door on the map and a taxi fare in real life. It never became St Leonards, and the people buying here now are paying for that, in the good sense.
