What are the schools like in Northfleet?

For anyone buying or renting in Northfleet.

The schools are one of the best things about buying in Northfleet. About nine in ten graded schools in the county are good or better. Both of the town's own secondaries have Northfleet in their names. A grammar school is just over the border in Gravesend for families who want the selective route. What decides your Septembers is the admissions rules, and that applies to good schools too.

Ofsted has graded 245 schools across Kent County Council's area, and 221 of them are good or outstanding, close to nine in ten. Of those, 38 are outstanding. At the other end, 21 require improvement and three are inadequate. Another 255 settings across the county have no published grade yet, either because they are new or because the inspectors have not been round, and none of them count towards either end of that picture. The county figure is the one that gets quoted, and Northfleet families draw from a much smaller corner of it.

That corner works through Kent's published admissions rules. Kent County Council allocates places by its own criteria, so buying near a particular school gets you closer to the gate without promising a place inside it. Parents who assume the house comes with the school tend to find out on offer day that the council never agreed to that.

At secondary age, Northfleet's own non-selective options are Northfleet School for Girls and Northfleet Technology College, which used to be Northfleet School for Boys. Two single-sex schools with the town's name on them shape the local secondary choice more than any league table, because families are choosing a school for a daughter and a school for a son. Mayfield Grammar School in Gravesend is the selective option on the doorstep, which turns Year 6 into a year of revision for the families who want it. Among the primaries, Rosherville Church of England Academy carries the name of the Victorian scheme that once promised this town a fashionable future, and St Botolph's Church of England Primary School shares its dedication with the parish church. With church schools, check the faith criteria in the admissions policy at the same time as the walk to the gate, since those criteria can rank a family above someone living closer. The rest of the primary list covers a mix of academies, community schools and church schools spread across the town.

Northfleet's schools are a reason to choose the town, backed by a county where good is the normal grade. The work for parents is getting a place, and the quality of what is on offer is the easy bit.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
