What's the area around Northfleet like?

For anyone buying or renting in Northfleet.

The area around Northfleet is much greener than a working Thames-side town is expected to be. There is a park or green space within a couple of minutes' walk of most front doors. The river and other water are a short walk away. A national cycle route passes close to most streets. The high street is pubs, takeaways and practical shops, with very little boutique.

Green space is the area's best feature. The average home is about 120 metres from the nearest park or green space, and around 26 green spaces lie within a kilometre. That is enough choice to have a favourite and a backup, and a different one for walking the dog when it rains.

Water is close as well. The nearest river, lake or other open water is about 650 metres from the average home, with around 14 bodies of water within a kilometre. On a stretch of the Thames shaped by chalk pits, a fair amount of that water sits in the old workings, and the river itself is the obvious one.

The National Cycle Network passes about 410 metres from the average home, and about 68% of postcodes are close to it. That puts a traffic-free or signed route within reach of most households, though nobody here will mistake the route for a country lane.

The area has 340 shops, 27 pubs and 24 restaurants among its rated premises. That is a high street built for errands and a pint. It suits people who cook at home most nights and go to the pub at the weekend more than people who want somewhere new to eat out every week.

Gravesham Borough Council's area recorded fine-particle pollution of about 7.7 micrograms per cubic metre in 2024, a borough-wide annual figure.

The town has more history than its reputation suggests. Its two conservation areas are The Hill and Lansdowne Square. The Springhead Roman site and the Neolithic sites near Ebbsfleet are nearby scheduled monuments, so people have been settling this patch since long before anyone built a cement works. Rosherville, named after the 1830s building scheme, held the Victorian pleasure gardens that ended their days as a set for early films between 1903 and 1911. Swanscombe, Ebbsfleet Valley and Gravesend all border the town, so the high street you use depends on which edge you live on.

Gardens are a decent size. Private gardens across the area add up to about 48,000 square metres for every 1,000 residents, with semis and terraces carrying most of it. It is less a place of balconies than of back gardens, and the number of trampolines tells you which.

The valuation list holds 646 rateable premises in the area, with shops, warehouses and workshop-style industrial units at the top, followed by offices. Those are premises on the rating list, not a count of businesses trading today, but the mix gives a fair idea of what the town is for, which is work.

Of the 133 food premises given a hygiene rating, about 81% hold the top score of five, and only about 1% sit at the bottom of the scale. The town's kitchens are cleaner than its reputation would suggest.

No protected landscape overlaps the area: there is no area of outstanding natural beauty, no site of special scientific interest and no ancient woodland. The green space here is parks, cemeteries and recreation grounds, used every day, and none of it needs protecting from the residents.

The surroundings are among Northfleet's real strengths. Parks are close, water is near and a cycle route is a short walk from most homes, and all of that comes with a working town, not instead of one.
