Longfield, New Ash Green and Hartley

Three villages, one name, two cars each·Kent·South East England

Three villages share one very long name, which tells you the boundary people gave up before anyone else did. New Ash Green was planned in the 1960s as a modernist experiment in how people ought to live, and those people then did what everyone in Kent does: they bought a second car. Hartley and Longfield went the traditional way, filling the gaps between the lanes with bungalows until the countryside became something you drive through to get to the station. This is commuter Kent for people who wanted a garden big enough to have opinions about, and now spend every weekend defending those opinions from moss.
