North Harrow
North Harrow was a field called Hooking Green until the Metropolitan Railway put a station in it, and it has spent every year since being one stop from somewhere more famous. The semis went up between the wars to the Metro-land formula, with bay windows, pebbledash and a front garden that most owners have since paved over for the second car. Pinner got the cottages and the village story, and North Harrow got the same tube line at a price nobody mentions at Pinner dinner parties. It is Metro-land with the romance worn off, which turns out to be the version people can actually afford to live in.
