What are the schools like in North Harrow?

For anyone buying or renting in North Harrow.

The schools are the strongest reason to buy in North Harrow. Nearly every graded school in the borough is good or outstanding. The local primaries do well in maths. Two state secondaries serve the area. Getting a place is the harder part, and parents can do something about that.

The eight state primaries in the area averaged a Key Stage 2 maths score of about 107 at the end of primary school. Longfield Primary School and Grange Primary School are among them, along with Roxbourne Primary School towards Rayners Lane. Families who bought a semi for the garden often find the primary is what they end up valuing most.

There are two mainstream state secondaries around here, Rooks Heath School and Whitmore High School, and between them they average an Attainment 8 score of about 49. Attainment 8 is the GCSE measure across a pupil's best eight subjects, weighted here by pupil numbers. With only two schools in the average, one strong year group at either school is enough to move it. The John Lyon School is also in the area, outside the state sector.

Across the London Borough of Harrow, Ofsted has rated 28 of the 29 graded settings good or outstanding, which is almost all of them. Nine of those are outstanding. One requires improvement and none is inadequate. Another 19 settings in the borough have no published grade yet and are left out of that count entirely. The borough-wide figure tells you Harrow's schools are generally strong, but it says little about which one your child will end up at.

Harrow council allocates places under its published admissions rules, so owning a house a few streets from Longfield or Whitmore gives you no right to a place there. Read the council's admissions criteria for the year your child will apply, and look up how far from the school gate the last place was offered in recent years. That distance shrinks and grows from year to year, and nobody can measure it from a garden path. Buyers who expect a short walk to count as an offer tend to learn otherwise when the letters arrive.

North Harrow's schools are one of its real strengths, with good results at both primary and secondary level. The weak point is the admissions process, because the schools are only an advantage once your child has a place.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
