What's the area around North Harrow like?

For anyone buying or renting in North Harrow.

North Harrow is a tightly packed suburb where you are never far from green space. A park or playing field is a short walk from almost every front door. There is water within a few minutes too. The high street is mostly shops, with few pubs. For somewhere this dense, it has a lot of open space.

On average, the nearest green space is about 150 metres from a North Harrow home, and there are 27 green spaces within a kilometre. Between Headstone and North Harrow there is a stretch of open land, made up of football and rugby pitches and the Headstone Manor moated site. Further west, Pinner Park is still farmland. The ring of open space around the semis was planned that way, and it still works.

Water of some kind is about 460 metres away on average, with 16 bodies of water within a kilometre. Headstone Manor, the oldest of them, is a moated manor, which makes the local medieval moat one of the more unusual sights on a dog walk.

The National Cycle Network is about 7.8 kilometres away on average, and no postcode in the area is close to it. Anyone keen on longer rides will be loading the bike into a car or riding on ordinary roads first. Historic England's register also lists Harrow Park, Canons Park and Bentley Priory among the historic parks and gardens in the wider district, for a weekend walk with more space.

Harrow's annual fine-particle air pollution averaged about 8 micrograms per cubic metre in 2024.

The valuation list has 934 rateable premises in North Harrow, and 425 of them are shops. Another 137 are offices, 35 are restaurants and only 9 are pubs. These are premises on the valuation list, not a count of businesses open today. A suburb of about 66,000 people with 425 shops and 9 pubs is one built for running errands and then heading home.

Of the 289 food premises with a hygiene rating, 47% hold the top score of five, and about 10% sit at the low end of the scale. Look up a takeaway's rating before ordering, since the scores vary widely.

Private gardens add plenty more. Across the area there are about 57,000 square metres of garden for every 1,000 residents, and the semis' back gardens are a real asset for families here. They are also where most of the extensions in this suburb end up being built.

North Harrow has no protected landscape overlapping it. There is no area of outstanding natural beauty, no site of special scientific interest and no ancient woodland. The green space here is parks, playing fields and pasture, and no official designation covers any of it. That keeps it practical, used for kickabouts and dog walks.

North Harrow's surroundings are one of its real strengths, with parks a short walk from the door and fields beyond the last semi. The high street is practical and has few pubs.
