Stanmore

London's top floor, and it acts like it·Greater London·London

Stanmore is where the Jubilee line runs out of ideas, and the people who bought here consider that the whole point. A hotel millionaire once built a railway with a station disguised as a church to tempt rich Londoners up the hill, lost the bet, and watched the Underground win it decades later with mile upon mile of interwar semis. The Battle of Britain was run from the big house up the road, and nothing since has been allowed to get that exciting. Even W. S. Gilbert, who drowned in his own pond nearby, managed it privately and with a decent-sized garden.
