Is Stanmore a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Stanmore.

Stanmore is a safe area, and noticeably safer than the borough around it. Crime here runs at about two-thirds the level a London postcode makes people expect. The Harrow average is higher. Violence makes up a smaller share of the total than it does nationally. What does turn up more often is theft from homes and cars, the kind of crime a well-off suburb attracts.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 3,727 crimes across Stanmore in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, which gives a published rate of about 67 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 22% below the Harrow average. A full twelve months means one bad weekend cannot move the figure much.

Across Harrow as a whole the published rate for the same year is about 85 per 1,000, against Stanmore's 67. Both figures are moderate for outer London, and Stanmore's is the lower of the two. The borough's average is made up mostly further down the hill.

Stanmore is not empty countryside. The average neighbourhood holds about 7,380 people per square kilometre, unemployment is about 3%, and around 11% of households are overcrowded. That is a busy, built-up suburb with most adults in work, and nothing about it is sleepy except the closing times on the Broadway.

The mix is where Stanmore differs from the national pattern. Violence and sexual offences make up about 27% of recorded crime here against about 35% nationally, and that category includes common assault where nobody was hurt, so the lower share is the useful fact. Anti-social behaviour is about 22% against 16% nationally. Vehicle crime is about 11% against 5%, and burglary about 9% against 4%, both roughly double the national share. Other theft, at about 7%, is close to the national share, and drugs offences are about 5% against 4%. Crime here mostly targets property, and a suburb of large semis with cars on the drive gives thieves plenty of it. The police's online street-level crime map shows which roads carry the burglaries and car crimes, and it is worth an evening's study for any shortlisted address with a long front garden and a car on show.

What happens after a report is a force-wide question with a force-wide answer. The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces, and about 53% of its cases are closed with no suspect identified. That is the record for all of London, not just Stanmore, and it says nothing about how likely a crime is here. It does mean the burglary figures above are better dealt with by a good lock than by waiting for an arrest.

Safety is one of the things Stanmore gets right. The thieves are drawn by the semis and the cars, and most of the borough's crime is happening somewhere else.
