What are the schools like in Stanmore?

For anyone buying or renting in Stanmore.

Stanmore's schools are very good, and the only real argument is about getting into them. Almost every graded school in the borough is good or better. The primaries post strong maths results. The secondaries hold up too. Parents here worry less about the quality and more about whether their house is close enough.

Around here there are five mainstream state primaries with published Key Stage 2 results, and their average maths score comes to about 110. Stanburn and Whitchurch are two of them, and St John's CofE carries the name of the parish church Queen Adelaide laid the foundation stone for in 1849, which gives the school run more royal history than most. A brick church on a hill and a maths average to match is a very Stanmore combination.

At secondary level, three mainstream state secondaries in the area have a pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score of about 56. Bentley Wood High and Avanti House School are among them. The town's own name goes to Stanmore College, which takes students at sixteen, so the place's best-known educational brand is the one parents think about last.

Harrow's record with the inspectors is the strongest part. Ofsted has graded 29 schools and settings across the borough, and 28 of them are good or better, nine of them outstanding. One requires improvement and none is inadequate. Another 19 have no published grade yet, so they are neither praised nor blamed here. Harrow parents can complain about many things, but on the inspection record only one school out of 29 gives them grounds.

Places are allocated under Harrow Council's published admissions rules, so living near Stanburn or Bentley Wood High does not put your child on the register; it gives you a position in the queue. Find the council's allocation records for the last few years at the school you have in mind and see how far from the gate the last child offered a place lived, because that distance moves and the house doesn't. Families who buy on the assumption that the nearest school comes with the deeds tend to find out otherwise on national offer day.

For schools, Stanmore is about as reliable as a London suburb gets, and the hard part is the admissions queue, not the classroom.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
