Edgware

The suburb its own Victorians tried to prevent·Greater London·London

Edgware is where the Northern line gives up, and plenty of the people still on the train at that point have decided that counts as arriving. The Victorian residents fought off a railway for fear it would cover the fields in architectural atrocities, then the Tube turned up anyway and brought street after street of interwar semis, which is how most planning objections end. The old Ritz cinema is now a gym, flats and a Caffè Nero, so the town went from paying to watch heroes to paying to sweat next to strangers. Watling Street has been carrying people through Edgware on their way to somewhere else since the Romans, and the town has never once taken it personally.
