Elm Park

Interwar optimism, now with a Tesco Express·Greater London·London

Elm Park was sold in 1935 as "Elm Park Romford", which tells you the developer knew exactly which name would shift houses, and it wasn't the one on the station sign. Costain talked the council into squeezing in more homes than the rules normally allowed, handed over wider roads and a park by way of apology, and the semis have stood shoulder to shoulder ever since. Ninety years on the pitch has barely moved: a semi with a front drive, the District line at the end of the road, and a faint hope nobody at the dinner party asks which end of it.
