Hornchurch

Essex in spirit, London on the council tax bill·Greater London·London

Hornchurch was moved from Essex into London in 1965 and has carried on putting Essex on the envelope ever since. The ice sheet that got further south than any other in Britain stopped at The Dell, just below St Andrew's, which makes it the first visitor on record to reach Hornchurch and decide this would do. The town has five stations and not one of them in the middle, which takes a kind of talent. In 1967 the owner of Nelmes manor knocked the house down to dodge a preservation order, and that is about as clear a statement of suburban values as anyone will ever put in writing.
