Colyton, Devon

Bought itself off the Crown, coasting ever since·Devon·South West England

Colyton spent the best part of a thousand years being difficult, sent half its men off to the Monmouth Rebellion, and then apparently used up its entire lifetime allowance of trouble in one go. What is left is a Devon town so thoroughly at ease with itself that its most famous piece of public transport is a tram that exists purely to move tourists a few miles and back again. The Coly runs through the middle of it, the grammar school pulls in ambitious parents from three counties, and everything else moves at the speed of a place where the tannery outlasted the castle. Come for the seventeenth-century rebellion, stay because nothing has happened since and that turns out to be the appeal.
