Axminster

Famous for its floors, overlooked for everything above them·Devon·South West England

Axminster has been making carpets for royal palaces since 1755, which is a long time to spend on the floors of houses nobody in Axminster will ever be invited into. The town sits on a hill above the Axe with a Thursday market that has outlasted the Romans, the cattle auction, and most of the people who complained about the bypass. It is a working Devon town rather than a coastal one, close enough to the sea to smell it on a good day and far enough from it that the second-home money went to Lyme Regis instead and left the place to get on with itself. That trade has been better for Axminster than anyone there will admit out loud.
