Bridport

A rope town that learned to charge extra·Dorset·South West England

Bridport spent nine hundred years making rope, most of it for hanging people, and has now settled into making flat whites for people who moved down from Bristol. The main street is absurdly wide because it was built to dry rope, which means it has the proportions of a Parisian boulevard and the contents of a Dorset market town. Everything here is old, listed, or both, and the ones that aren't get a conservation officer's opinion anyway. It is a genuinely lovely place to live, provided you have made peace with the idea that a hospital is thirty minutes away and always will be.
