Is Bridport a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Bridport.

Bridport is about as safe as the rest of Dorset, which is the dullest available answer and also the correct one. Recorded crime sits a fraction above the county rate. Around eleven hundred offences across a year. Nothing in the numbers marks the town out in either direction. It is an ordinary small-town safety picture, and the loudest opinions about it are rarely the best informed.

Police.uk records 1,102 offences in the area over the twelve months to May 2026, and publishes a rate of about 56 crimes per thousand residents for the same period. Both are published figures rather than anything calculated here, and they rest on different population bases, so one does not divide tidily into the other. The rate is the number to compare with; the count is the one that makes it feel like a real town.

The Dorset average over that same year is about 55 per thousand. Bridport comes in at about 56. That is roughly 3% above the county, a gap visible in a spreadsheet and nowhere else in daily life.

The texture behind those figures is unremarkable. Population density averages about 2,825 people per square kilometre across the built-up area, unemployment runs at about 2%, and about 2% of households are overcrowded. None of those things causes crime and none of them is offered here as though it does. They describe a place that is neither packed tight nor emptying out.

The category split for the same twelve months is where the useful detail sits. Violence and sexual offences account for about 38% of recorded crime against about 35% nationally, which is close to the national shape. That heading is a broad statutory grouping running from common assault without injury upwards, and it is the largest category almost everywhere, so quoting it on its own tells you almost nothing except that the town is in England. Anti-social behaviour is the outlier, at about 28% here against about 16% nationally. Criminal damage and arson at about 7%, and other theft at about 7%, both land on the national share almost exactly. Shoplifting runs lower than the national picture at about 5% against about 8%, and public order lower too at about 5% against about 7%.

Reporting a crime and having somebody answer for it are separate questions, and the second is settled force-wide rather than street by street. Dorset Police charge or summons a suspect in about 14% of cases against about 12% nationally, which places the force 12th of 42. About 35% of cases close with no suspect identified at all. That last figure is the honest answer to whether anyone will be caught, and it measures something entirely different from how safe the place is to live in.

Middling, in the most literal sense: Bridport sits on the county average with a fraction on top. Nobody moves here for the crime figures, and nobody sensible stays away because of them either.

Check it for your address. These figures describe the wider area, not a single street. For recent crime near a particular address, use the map on police.uk.
