Good, and better than a town this far down a valley has any right to expect. Four in five graded settings across the county come out good or better. Colyton has its own primary academy and its own grammar school, both carrying the town's name. The nearest primary is a walk and the nearest secondary a short drive. Schooling is the one subject on which this place does not have to make excuses.
Ofsted has published an overall grade for 172 settings across Devon, the local authority Colyton sits in, and 138 of them are good or outstanding, which is roughly four in five. Three hold outstanding. Thirty-one require improvement and three are graded inadequate. A further 135 settings carry no published overall grade at all, which means they have not been inspected under the current arrangements rather than anything about how they are doing. All of those counts describe Devon as a whole rather than the streets around the Coly, and thirty-one settings requiring improvement across a county this large is a number that means very little until one of them turns out to be yours.
Living near a school settles nothing. Admission is decided by each school's own criteria and by how many families apply in a given year, not by which side of a hedge the house sits on, and that goes double for a school with grammar in its name. Anyone buying here on the strength of a specific school should read that school's own admissions arrangements before the offer, not after the survey.
Distance is the other half of the practical question. The Department for Transport's modelled journey times, which date from 2019 and are steadier for cars than for buses, put a primary school about 18 minutes away on foot or roughly 8 by car, and a secondary about 17 minutes by car. By public transport that secondary trip comes out at about 45 minutes, and the modelled walk runs to about 93 minutes, which is the courteous way of recording that nobody does it.
Colyton Primary Academy is the school carrying the town's name, and Farway Church of England Primary School covers one of the surrounding villages, on the small scale that rural Devon runs on. Colyton Grammar School is the secondary here, and it is the name that brings a particular sort of buyer to this valley in the first place, spreadsheet already open. Beyond those, families in the outlying hamlets draw on the wider county provision, and the school run becomes another reason the second car never quite gets sold.
Strip out the countryside and the quiet and the schools are still the strongest thing this area has going for it. Most places that price like this are selling the view instead.
