Clanfield

A field that grew semis, not crops·Hampshire·South East England

Clanfield spent centuries as a cleared field with a church and a handful of farmers, then found the A3 and grew thirty times over without pausing to ask whether it should. The South Downs wrap it on three sides like a national park holding its nose, and the fourth side is a dual carriageway, which tells you exactly how the place decided to expand. It is where people who wanted Petersfield's countryside but could only stretch to a post-war semi come to buy the view and drive to someone else's train station. A perfectly nice place to live, once it forgives itself for swallowing the village it used to be.
